State law requires CSI monitor all schools in its portfolio for legal and financial compliance. To that end, CSI charter contracts require CSI schools adopt and implement a grievance policy consistent with CSI’s Grievance Policy. The policy acknowledges that grievances are best handled by the school and seeks to encourage the proper resolution of grievances at the school level.  The policy requires schools provide a tiered approach to handling grievances, whereby the grievant must first attempt to resolve the issue at the lowest possible level (e.g., individual staff member, school leader, school board). In the rare case that a grievant is not satisfied with the school’s response to a complaint, the grievant may appeal the School Board’s decision to CSI’s Executive Director.

School grievance processes may differ depending on the nature and severity of the issue involved. This includes directing grievants to alternate process for complaints of 1) harassment and discrimination and bullying based on a protected class, and 2) sex-based discrimination or sex-based harassment.
